The American Red Cross Lifeguard r.24 course is the 2024 update to the Red Cross lifeguarding program, designed to train participants to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies in pools and similar aquatic environments. It provides certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, all valid for two years. The course is offered either fully in person or in a blended learning format that includes several hours of online modules followed by in-person skills sessions totaling around 27.5 hours, depending on the provider. To enroll, participants must be at least 15 years old and pass a prerequisite swim test that includes a 150-yard swim, a two-minute tread using only the legs, a 50-yard swim, and a timed deep-water retrieval in which they dive to 7–10 feet to pick up a 10-pound object and swim it back within 1 minute and 40 seconds.

The r.24 curriculum emphasizes both prevention and response. Newer features include revised terminology, updated rescue techniques such as modified passive-submerged rescues, and a stronger focus on surveillance and scanning skills. Students learn a wide range of rescues, extrications, spinal motion restriction procedures, CPR/AED use, and first aid. Throughout the course, they must demonstrate mastery through scenario-based skill tests, including rapid in-water rescues, rotations on guard stands, multiple-rescuer CPR, and written exams. Successful completion requires full participation, passing scores on all assessments, and completion of all online content for blended courses. Overall, r.24 aims to modernize lifeguard training with clearer language, more realistic practice, and a greater emphasis on prevention, teamwork, and quick, effective emergency response.
